Phoenix, Arizona Foodie Guide
A foodie guide to the Phoenix restaurants actually worth the hype
Caleb and I snuck away for a quick kid-free trip to Arizona, and I’m still thinking about the meals we had. While it was our first time exploring the Phoenix food scene, it completely exceeded our expectations.
I’ll be honest…finding those spots wasn’t easy at first. We actually booked one of the more popular “mountain view” restaurants and ended up spending over $200 on a meal that was well below average and not worth the hype.
That’s exactly why I wanted to put this together—to save you time (and money) when planning your own trip.
If you take one thing from this, it’s this: get the views from the hikes, not the dinner reservations. We recommend staying in North Phoenix to get the best of both—easy access to Sedona’s views and Phoenix’s food scene.
We’re always drawn to places that value quality ingredients, thoughtful menus, and a welcoming, intentional atmosphere.
How We Choose Where to Eat
When we’re dining out, we keep a few simple things in mind:
🏡 Non-chain restaurants or locally owned spots that showcase creativity and a personal touch.
⭐️ Restaurants with a solid reputation and reviews that reflect consistent quality.
👨🍳 A chef or owner passionate about their food and invested in the guest experience.
🌿 Food crafted fresh in-house from simple, high-quality ingredients.
✨ An atmosphere that feels intentional not mass-produced, with servers who know the menu and take pride in making your experience great.
1. Valentine
Breakfast, lunch, or dinner. This was hands down our favorite.
Relaxed and unpolished (in the best way), with super friendly staff and consistency all around. Everything feels fresh, local, and intentional. The espresso is a 10/10, and we found ourselves going back multiple times.
Tip: Ask your server about the speakeasy 1912 bar, tucked behind the restaurant for after-dinner drinks. Reservations recommended.
2. Matt’s Big Breakfast (downtown location) + Futuro
A super fast, very casual, scratch-made diner breakfast.
They don’t take reservations, so we recommend going on a weekday.
After breakfast, walk down to Futuro for a craft coffee experience.
3. Bacanora, Huarachis & Espíritu
These sister restaurants all bring the same energy—vibrant, lively, and full of personality.
Bacanora: intimate with an open wood-fire grill
Huarachis: bold, casual and full of flavor
Espíritu: moody, elevated dinner vibe
The food is unique, high-quality, and meant to be experienced. Trust the menu and make reservations. All are a must!
4. Gai Baan
Gai Baan is one of the best! A Thai street food restaurant with so much flavorful and fresh ingredients!
Hole-in-the-wall vibes in the best way, very personal, and incredibly friendly. Everything we tried was recommended and worth it.
Reservations are a good idea for dinner.
5. Pizzeria Bianco
Perfect for a quick bite to eat for lunch. Great wood fired pizzas.
Phoenix completely impressed us when it comes to food. It’s a place we’d go back to again purely for the dining. If you’re planning a visit, start with these!
