Mom’s Homemade Wheat Bread

Nothing compares to homemade bread, especially this soft, sweet, and perfectly tender whole wheat recipe my mom has been making for years. I love this recipe not only for its amazing flavor but also for its simplicity.

I also linked a section below with everything you need to make it—settings, tips, and our favorite tools to make it foolproof.

Serves | 1 2lb loaf

Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ c water

  • ⅓ c extra virgin olive oil

  • 2 tsp salt

  • ⅓ c honey

  • 2 c whole wheat flour + 2 c unbleached bread flour

  • 1 tbsp instant yeast

Directions:

  1. Add ingredients into a bread machine pan in the order listed (except for yeast). Dig a small hole in the flour and add yeast. Do not mix.

  2. Add bread pan to bread machine and close the lid. Choose the homemade whole wheat setting and hit start. The bread machine will now knead, proof, and bake the bread.

  3. When the baking cycle ends, open the lid and remove pan. Let bread cool completely on a cooling rack before slicing.

To mill your own flour, use 2 3⁄4 cups hard white wheat berries in place of the flour listed above.

For a gluten free variation, add in 3 eggs and sub the flour for 4 cups of 1:1 gluten free all-purpose flour (King Arthur).
